The land of matcha and sushi took the world by storm in 2018, with no sign of its popularity slowing down in 2019. Home to approximately 37 million people, the fascinating Asian metropolis takes culture shock to a whole new level. From robot restaurants and hedgehog cafes, to historic temples and the crazy world of Harajuku, Tokyo is an experience you won’t find anywhere else. Seriously, where else can you dress up as Mario and drive karts through the largest city in the world?

2. Reykjavik, Iceland

Colourful houses, snow-capped mountains, and that little phenomena we like to call the Northern Lights – Iceland’s capital city is a sight to behold. Home to the world-famous Blue Lagoon, head straight to the man-made geothermal spa and relax in its warm, mineral-rich waters. Keen to explore the volcanic terrain? Join a Golden Circle tour and get up close and personal with the natural geysers. Still not satisfied? A spot of whale watching should do the trick.

3. Palawan, Philippines

Crowned ‘Best Island in the World’ an impressive 3 times, Palawan can only be described as heaven on earth. Lush mountains adorn the island’s turquoise waters and white sand beaches, making it one of the Philippines’ most popular holiday destinations amongst locals and tourists. Made up of around 1,800 smaller islands, Palawan is known for its limestone caves, scuba diving, lagoon snorkelling, and island-hopping tours. Not forgetting the Puerto Princesa Underground River – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

4. Dublin, Ireland

If you’re not visiting for the dreamy accent, you’re almost certainly heading to Dublin for some great craic and a Guinness-fuelled night out. We all know the Irish love a drink, but the republic’s capital has so much more to offer with its vast history and Gaelic culture. From Dublin Castle to Kilmainham Gaol, there’s no shortage of museums and attractions exploring the city’s political and religious heritage. Still craving a pint? Okay, we’ll let you off… Dublin’s famous Temple Bar and popular Guinness Storehouse are sure to sort you out.

5. Kotor, Montenegro

Often skipped in favour of Croatia and Italy, Montenegro is the Adriatic’s hidden gem. Luckily, Kotor and its beautiful bay are slowly gaining repute for their unspoilt beauty – making it the perfect addition to your 2019 bucket list. Admire the white buildings and orange rooftops as you wander the cobbled streets of the Old City. Find a quiet spot overlooking the bay as you comprehend the magnificence looking back at you. Need a new profile pic? With a backdrop like this, you’re in pretty safe hands.

Many Brits think of Portugal as a ‘beach and sit by the pool’ kinda holiday – but have you ever considered their colourful capital Lisbon? Set your sights further than the Algarve and you’ll be rewarded with a charming metropolis brimming with history, street art, and an abundance of character. First things first… no trip to Lisbon is complete without a ride on their yellow 19th century trams. After a quick pit stop to try their famous custard tarts, hop on the train to Sintra to visit Pena Palace – a brightly coloured castle that’s almost too impressive for words.

So, what are you waiting for? Start the new year with a bang and get crossing places off your list! Head to the Super Break website and let the adventure begin…
