In recent years, an increasing number of musicals have been inspired by the musical back catalogues of certain bands or artists. From The Beatles and Queen to Abba and the Spice Girls, there are now more opportunities than ever to hear your favourite songs from yesteryear in London’s West End. Here’s our pick of some of the top musicals inspired by musicians:
The Spice Girls are one of the guilty pleasure bands from my childhood and have long had an influence on the music world, and now a musical has been created in their honour. Viva Forever! is a highly anticipated production inspired by the songs of the Spice Girls and tells the story of a young girl’s journey to stardom.
Written by award winning comedienne Jennifer Saunders, Viva Forever! promises to be fun filled with laughs guaranteed. You can sing along to classic Spice Girls hits from ‘Mama’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ to ‘Spice Up Your Life’ and of course, ‘Viva Forever!’, which are sure to have you singing and dancing in the aisles.
Showing at the Piccadilly Theatre from November 2012-January 2013
Let It Be
Any fan of the fab four would be bowled over by this theatrical concert. Let It Be takes you back to swinging sixties where you can relive The Beatles career from their humble beginnings to their stratospheric rise to fame. The musical features some of their most iconic hits including ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Come Together’ and ‘Let It Be’.
Showing at the Prince of Wales Theatre from September 2012-January 2013
We Will Rock You
This rock phenomenon created by Ben Elton and Queen themselves is one of my personal favourites. We Will Rock You tells the story of a group of bohemian rebels who fight against the system in a world where everyone thinks the same thoughts and wears the same fashions. What’s more, musical expression is restricted and instruments are banned. The group set out on a mission to track down some instruments and make music great again. The musical is sound tracked by 24 of Queen’s classic hits including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Killer Queen’ and ‘We Will Rock You’.
Showing at the Dominion Theatre for the foreseeable future
