Mary Poppins is making her way around the UK as the theatre show goes on a spectacular regional tour. The popular film/book of the same name has been transformed for the modern audience and features a breathtaking ensemble of much-loved characters, as well as stunning songs and choreography and impressive stage design.

David Thomas, our very own Head of Theatre, went to see the show in Birmingham. Take a look at his review of the show and find out more…

There was magic in the air at the Birmingham Hippodrome yesterday. It was borne in on the East Wind as the Mary Poppins UK Tour began the next leg on its Voyage of National Enchantment.

I first met Mary Poppins in 1965 at the Odeon High Street Kensington – my mother had taken the afternoon off work in order to treat my sister and I. Flash forward thirty-odd years and I was re-acquainted at The Bristol Hippodrome where the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh Musical had its World Première.

Twelve years later and the magic is stronger than ever, etched on the faces of the Birmingham Hippodrome audience, made ageless by the universal look of wide-eyed wonder… the rooftop number “Step In Time” has got to be one of the most powerful coup-de-theatre of all time.

With a truly magnificent cast, led by Zizi Strallen and Matt Lee, bringing to life P L Travis’ timeless tale of the practically perfect Nanny, I defy anyone not to fall in love with Mary Poppins all over again.
