To help you decide where to go on your next short break, we’ve created a nostalgic Travel Top Trumps series in collaboration with some insider experts from our most popular European cities. We scouted out some of Europe’s best travel bloggers, and asked them to rate their favourite cities based on their insider expertise.
Our specially selected bloggers were given a starting figure of 50 points and asked to rate their chosen city on the following criteria: romance, affordability, activities, cuisine, hospitality, aesthetic appeal and nightlife.
The aim of Top Trumps is to play with two or more people, deal the cards randomly, pick your highest category and hope that your opponent/s can’t beat you. The player with the highest score in that category wins their opponents card; end goal being to acquire as many cards as possible. The player with the most cards wins.
How to Use Our Travel Top Trumps
We’re spoilt for choice in Europe when it comes to city break destinations. There’s so many amazing cities only a few hours away, making spontaneous short breaks entirely possible for those of us wanting to escape and experience something new.
Our Top Trumps series is designed to help you choose where to go when you just want to go somewhere.
Line up the cards and play them against each other category by category to whittle down your options based on what’s most important to you. By the end, you should have found your ideal destination and be one step closer to jetting off.

Barcelona insider expert, Ben Holbrook set up his blog Driftwood Journals after relocating to the Spanish city and falling in love with its food and culture. Originally from South Wales, Ben took the leap in 2009 and hasn’t looked back since.
His blog specifically focuses on giving insider tips and recommendations on activities, food, drink & accommodation in Barcelona.
Ben’s personal Barcelona highlights are the avant-garde style of its art and culture. Unable to choose just one to take the top spot, his joint highest rating went to the activities, cuisine, nightlife and romance categories.
The city rates particularly highly on our website, we’ve even put together a Barcelona guide to make sure you get the best out of your trip to the city, whether you prefer shopping, eating out, nightlife or culture – there’s custom tips for each activity.
Edinblogger author Gary created his Edinburgh blog with his friend Gemma to share photos and provide honest reviews of restaurants, events and nightlife in the famously historical Scottish capital city.
The blog includes a ‘what’s on’ guide and covers the latest events held in Edinburgh, not to mention excellently helpful and detailed reviews of the best food and drink hangouts – ideal for anyone visiting for the first time.
Gary’s clear category winner was the aesthetic appeal of Edinburgh, and its range of famous festivals was a talking point too.
Our Edinburgh trips offer a choice of over 100 short flights and hotels ranging from 2-5 stars, or if you’re a little closer you could even take the train.
Paris resident Louise moved to France in 2009. The original Yorkshire lass graduated with a French degree from the University of Bristol in 2009, and started her successful blogging career in 2011. As a communications and publishing expert, what better way to utilise her skills then to create her very own blog, Lou in Paris?
Paris preceded its reputation for being ‘the city of love’ and was awarded one of Louise’s highest category ratings for romance, along with aesthetic appeal.
Our Parisian hotel and travel deals give you the chance to explore this enchanting city, or if you’re looking for something fun-filled and child friendly, why not consider Disneyland Paris as an option?
Although Jasper boasts a number of adventurous activities on his journeys, including lobster hunting in the Bahamas and diving in the Similan Islands, the city of Amsterdam holds a special place in Jasper’s heart.
He described the scenic Netherlands capital as “the city of freedom” and praised its natural beauty and romantic canals. His highest rating was given to the vibrant nightlife which attracts tourists from all over the world.
Amsterdam is a popular SuperBreak destination, offering a variety of hotels (from budget to luxury) and flights from over ten UK airports. We recommend hitting the Van Gogh museum to soak up the culture on offer here.
Travel journalist Duncan Rhodes set up the Urban Travel Blog – dubbed ‘the independent guide to city breaks and urban adventure’ – back in 2009. Krakow charmed its way into Duncan’s top ten weekend breaks, and he now calls the city home.
The Editor-in-Chief moved to Krakow a few years ago to further his travel writing career, and that’s when his love for the city was born. Romance, affordability, nightlife and aesthetic appeal are Duncan’s favourite things about Krakow.
City and countryside combined, Krakow is the perfect place for a short break if you like a bit of everything, and don’t want to break the bank on your trip. Our top tip is to head to the Oskar Shindler’s Factory where you can discover the inspiration behind the iconic film.
