With the festive season approaching at pace, we thought we’d celebrate our favourite season (Christmas Shopping season!) with our list of the Top 5 Christmas Market Breaks in the UK…
It’s an open secret that York is a terrific short break destination at any time of the year, and its breath-taking beauty is not lessened by the cold weather. Wrap up warm or hole up in a cosy pub – York has plenty of them. For this reason alone, it makes the cut on our list of top Christmas Market Break locations. There’s something festive and almost Dickensian about the hustle and bustle around York’s intimate centre on a Christmas market day and, though it does get very busy, friendly York is always a pleasant place to shop!
Oh London. A magical utopia devoted to Christmas commerce, or a busy free-for-all only worth attempting in riot gear? The nation’s capital sure does divide opinion when it comes to Christmas. We rather like how busy it gets – and the sheer number of Christmas markets dotted around the city means there’s bargains aplenty and hours of fun ready to be had. The always-popular Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and Winter at The Southbank Centre are our personal favourites. If you’re braving it this winter, we thoroughly recommend our hotels near Kings Cross and Euston so you can easily transport your shopping haul back home!
With around 10 Christmas Markets, all within easy walking distance of each other, there’s nothing more pleasant than strolling around Manchester’s vibrant city centre as Christmas approaches. With 300 stalls and chalets dotted around the centre, the sheer number of traders means there’s something for everyone; with a wide variety of European cuisine on offer – from Spanish Paella to Hungarian Goulash via traditional German Bratwurst – you can really get a flavour of the continent in cosmopolitan Manchester.
With quirky stage shows, a children’s market, ice skating and even a Helter Skelter, Christmas in Edinburgh captures the best of the fun and frivolous spirit which the Fringe Fest brings to the Scottish capital. Located just beneath The Mound, Edinburgh’s popular Christmas Market has drawn visitors to the city for over 20 years. Stretching right along East Princes Street Gardens to the Scott Monument, there’s no prettier setting for a Christmas Market in the country. The Scottish Market, running concurrently in St Andrews Square, is also well worth a visit for the best local produce.
Nobody does Christmas Markets better than the Germans (apart from maybe the Austrians), so it may come as quite the shock that one of the biggest and best German Christmas Markets in Europe can be found in dearest Birmingham. The Frankfurt Christmas Market and Craft Market is the biggest outdoor Christmas Market in the UK; enjoy authentic German treats like schnitzels and glühwein, or opt for a warming hot chocolate while you shop instead. As if we didn’t have enough reasons to love England’s second city already! With the incredible Bullring Shopping Centre and high-end shopping in The Mailbox, Christmas shopping breaks don’t get much better than in Birmingham.
