As a devout Christmas fan, I’m a firm believer that one of the most exciting parts of the build up to the 25th of December is the shopping! Wrapping up warm in your winter coat, taking in the Christmas twinkling lights, live street bands and gingerbread lattes are all favourite parts of my festive shopping trips. I’m lucky enough to enjoy this in York every year, but I think the Christmas period is also a great excuse to get out of your local town and visit somewhere new on a Christmas shopping break.
Now we all know that shopping can be seriously exhausting work (especially when you’re trying to track down that perfect gift for THAT picky person who already has everything!) so combining it with a lovey hotel stay is a total treat. So here are my favourite UK cities for a Christmas shopping break…
Edinburgh comes first on my list as this is where I’m planning to do my shopping this Christmas! The Scottish capital has the perfect combination of big high street names with quirky independent boutiques, perfect if you’re looking for a really unique gift. Head to Victoria Street for Harvey Nichols and designer names or for something a little more unusual, head to Candlemaker Row. There’s also a fab German market going on from 25th November – 24th December. See you there!

If you want to go somewhere to really evoke that festive feeling, head towards the dreaming spires of Oxford. The magical ‘Harry Potter-like’ architecture is laced throughout the entire city and it feels amazingly traditional and historic as you wander around the town. I got to visit a snowy Oxford in March last year and it made me want to return at Christmas. Oxford’s traditional covered market sells everything from fashion and craft to jewellery and turkeys.

The ultra-modern and trendy town centre of Leeds is a fashionista’s heaven and at Christmas, it turns into a winter wonderland. Impressive Christmas lights line the wide shopping boulevard of Briggate and beyond. Packed with trendy high street shops and the glamorous Harvey Nic’s, Briggate also links to historic shopping quarters which stock everything from uber luxury to the downright bizarre. Alongside the Christkindelmarkt (8th November – 18th December) and the amazing Ice Cube ice rink in Millennium square, Leeds provides a unique Christmas shopping experience which I highly recommend.

Of course, I couldn’t write a Christmas shopping blog post without mentioning London! With it’s famous Christmas lights and the electric atmosphere during the month of December, a Christmas shopping break in London is something you have to do at least once! What makes it even better is the incredible Winter Wonderland event at Hyde Park which is packed with food stalls, unique market stalls and fairground rides, and best of all it’s FREE to enter. A London Christmas shopping break also provides you with the perfect excuse to combine your trip with a West End show and a fancy meal out. What’s not to love about that?

Being my University town, I know this place very well, so can vouch that Newcastle is a fantastic place for a Christmas shopping break. The city is known for its incredible value, so you can save yourself a packet on everything from your hotel room to your post shopping cocktails! The city centre is home to the fabulous Eldon Square shopping centre which gets a bling-tastic makeover in true Geordie style. Further out of town you’re also spoilt for choice at the Metro Centre and especially for Christmas, you can pick up some special festive treats at the Newcastle Christmas Market (4th – 8th December at Grey’s Monument) as well as the Newcastle Continental Market (15th – 30th November).
