Reigning supreme not only in the football league, but also as this week’s must-see city, Leicester is the place to be for a break which champions above the rest. A city steeped in history, saturated in culture and practically swimming in sights to see; there has never been a better time to pack a bag and experience what a short break in the East Midlands can do for the soul.
With Leicester City winning the football earlier in the week, we at SuperBreak have been inspired to delve into the Leicester’s treasure trove and share our findings. The top five sights, attractions and scenic spots in Leicester are only a scroll away whether it’s a family break, romantic city trip or a weekend break with friends.
1) Leicester Cathedral
Scooping the top spot of things to see in Leicester has to be the beating heart of the city, Leicester Cathedral. Whether it’s a few fleeting selfies outside or a slow stroll around the impressive interior, Leicester Cathedral needs to be ticked off your Leicester checklist, and its central location makes a great place to start your Leicester adventure. If you do decide to go and take a peek inside, you will be able to see the historical tomb of Richard III, and if you’re into your history, that’s one thing you should definitely factor into your itinerary.
2) National Space Centre
If it’s more science and space that floats your rocket ship, a trip to the National Space Centre is a no-brainer. A real cosmic delight, the award-winning, interactive museum is home to the UK’s largest planetarium and takes the glory as the UK’s largest attraction dedicated to space. Fusing all things universe with modern technology, you will be transported to a fascinating place where the secrets of the universe are right at your fingertips. We also heard that there’s a great onsite café where you can enjoy a yummy bite to eat under the museum’s rockets – sounds out of this world if you ask us!
3) Bradgate Park
If you decide to switch from the city-based soundtrack and tune in to a more serene symphony, then Bradgate Park is a day trip from Leicester which will be music to your ears. 830 acres of pristine parklands are yours for the taking and as Leicestershire’s largest country park, it’s full to the brim with gnarly oaks, glossy hills and adorable wildlife. A break in Leicester definitely calls for a trip to this park, and it’s an idyllic spot for a peaceful picnic or a spot of afternoon tea in one of the quaint tearooms. In the summer months, you might even catch one of the outdoor theatre performances at Bradgate House.
4) New Walk Museum And Art Gallery
When taking a break in Leicester, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery makes a great place to soak up some history and culture. The museum holds a diverse range of galleries including: Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Picasso Ceramics, The Attenborough Collection and the internationally renowned German Expressionist collection. The museum caters for all interests, and it makes for a great place to unleash or discover your artistic side.
5) Curve Theatre
It’s show time with our last pick of Leicester must-sees and we’re talking about the theatre. Curve is a contemporary theatre nestled in Leicester’s lively Cultural Quarter, and what makes it special is that unlike most theatres, there is no backstage area. This means that on your next break, you can be involved in your chosen performance every step and stage dash of the way. It’s the ideal place to enjoy a show before heading for a quiet drink in one of the centre’s quirky, local bars.
You’ll soon see why Leicester is topping the UK destination league, so why not add a big dose of super to that Leicester break this year?
