In part 1 of my 2 day SuperBreak adventure to Gibraltar I talked about dolphin excursions and monkey watching, as well as braving the cable car up the Rock and enjoying delish a la carte food at sunset. Sounds like a pretty awesome day doesn’t it? Well, get ready because day 2’s antics under the Gibraltarian sun were just as awesome. Read on as I reveal more fantastic ways to spend your time on a short break in Gibraltar.
Starting the day with a traditional English breakfast, we embarked on an all-in-one tour of the Rock. This tour, led by the wonderful people at Blands Travel, is jam-packed with all of Gibraltar’s best bits; from St Michael’s Cave and Europa Point to the One Hundred Tun Gun and yep, you guessed it… more cheeky Barbary Apes.
Heading for Europa Point first – the most southern part of Europe – we enjoyed spectacular views across the sea and of the beautiful African Rif Mountains in Morocco. Here we also found the Europa Point Trinity Lighthouse, built at the gateway of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in 1841. The lighthouse does more than guide the maritime community safely through the Strait, it also provides the perfect backdrop for those all-important picture perfect holiday snaps.
Venturing on up to the upper part of the Rock we entered the Nature Reserve to see more of the wonderful Barbary Apes. Watching them hang out with their babies, enjoying the cool breeze and beautiful sunshine, is a truly wonderful sight.
Passing the iconic Pillars of Hercules we moved onto St Michael’s Cave to discover the fascinating (and incredibly huge) stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. The people of Gibraltar have transformed the cave into a stunning spectacle with colourful lighting filling each and every angle. We also learnt that the cave can be used as a truly unique and magnificent auditorium for concerts, ballet and drama with 400 seats available for guests. I can only imagine the amazing atmosphere of such an event in a place like that!
As an added extra on the Blands Rock Tour, we visited The Great Siege Tunnels. The maze of passages hidden within the Rock was cleverly devised back in 1873 to defend the British from attacking foreign troops. Today you can walk through the tunnels to see where the canons point out over Gibraltar ready for any imposing enemies – there were none to be seen of this occasion thankfully! The tunnels offer visitors a fascinating journey through Gibraltarian history, as well as providing another fantastic place to snap some more beautiful shots of the city from inside the Rock.
Making our way back down the Rock we swung by the impressive 11th century Moorish Castle and finally reached Casemates Square for a spot of shopping before lunch. After picking out our souvenirs we headed for the 4* O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel where – rumour has it – popular Brit pop star, Olly Murs once stayed! Well, if it’s good enough for him, it’s certainly good enough for us!
Just like Olly and other star guests at the Eliot Hotel, we hit the high life on the 8th floor with a sneak peek in the penthouse suites followed by a delightful 2-course lunch at the rooftop bistro. For the rest of the afternoon we snoozed (and boozed – just a little) in the sun next to the hotel’s luxury rooftop pool – heaven!
To finish off an already splendid couple of days in Gibraltar, we put on our glad rags one last time for a very special evening at the 5* Sunborn Yacht Hotel. Sipping Champagne and sampling divine canapés, whilst enjoying panoramic vistas over the Mediterranean Sea from the yacht’s luxury sundeck is a moment I’ll never forget. As the sun set I began to wonder if I’d been transported to Monaco, but no, this was Gibraltar showing off its hidden lavishness and it felt like I was amongst the first to discover it.
Only recently opened in March this year, The Sunborn Gibraltar still boasts all the lovely shininess you’d expect of a 5*… except you’re not in any old 5* hotel, you’re on a superyacht and its magical! We had a nosey around some of the guest rooms available on-board and believe me they did not disappoint. Elegant, luxurious and modern with HUGE beds and marble shower rooms PLUS – and this is the best bit – a swanky one-touch control system for your lights, temperature and multimedia. That’s luxury worth paying for my friends!
For dinner we were treated to a delicious 3-course meal at the hotel’s Sky Restaurant followed by mouth-watering cocktails at the Sapphire Bar – a wonderful gastronomic experience for us all. The interior throughout the yacht is undeniably amazing with beautifully designed spaces, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and stunning light features for the perfect finish.
I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to end our little adventure in Gibraltar. We’d seen, been and eaten it all in just two days and I for one think this city is great. More than great… it combines everything we love about Britain with everything we love about holidaying in the sun. There’s a hotel to suit every style and budget, from cheap and cheerful to absolute extravagance. There’s an activity to appeal to all interests, from monkeying about with the Apes to getting your history on in the famous Rock tunnels. And to top it off, the sunny weather, which I’m pretty sure appeals to most of us Brits, provides the ultimate short break abroad! What more could we ask for this summer?!
