As a leading light of West End Musicals, appearing in such hits as The Sound of Music and Legally Blonde, what was it that attracted you to Kinky Boots and the role of Lauren?

I had an idea of the character of Lauren very different from how she is portrayed in the film. Much more off the wall. She is kooky, and I enjoy that in a role, “kookiness.” So as soon as I heard they were casting I got on to my agent and asked her to get me an audition. What I love about playing Lauren is you have to really let yourself go, and it works best when you can bounce off the audience reaction. During rehearsals I did not enjoy it one bit, not having an audience to work off, then on our first public dress, with only five hundred people in the invited audience, the atmosphere was… electric!

What is your favourite moment in the show?

That has to be my number “The History of Wrong Guys.” It is the most freeing number. A gift of a song. Every audience reacts differently to a show, but everyone can identify with this song. I’m forever having people come up to me and say “I’m such a Lauren.” I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

What is it like working with a Director who is also your choreographer -especially one with the energy levels of Jerry Mitchell?

Jerry is the absolute master of putting on a show with heart. He really understands the modern audience and he is incredibly inspirational for the cast. He’s a natural born leader and really supportive of us all the time, so every actor gives one hundred million percent!

What mental preparation do you need to fall in love with Killian Donnelly eight times a week?

I visit a psychiatrist once a week and… No seriously he’s a dream to work with. A real star. We’re neighbours (our dressing rooms are next to each other) and I’m forever stealing food from his fridge.

SuperBreak’s clients are coming to London to see Kinky Boots from all around the UK. The show is two-and-a-half-hours. They will be in London for two or three days. What do you recommend that they see and do during their 48 or 72 hours?

The first thing I would do is go on a bus tour, you get a million ideas from those. And I would definitely go to Sketch. It’s a restaurant in Mayfair, very pricey, but they have this amazing Parlour Bar. And the loos are out of this world –it is worth going there just to see the loos! Then there’s Jo Allen’s, everyone in the business goes there. Fantastic steaks and cocktails.

If you were taking a short break, anywhere in the UK, where would you go?

I tend to go on countryside breaks rather than cities. Probably the Norfolk Coast. Fresh air and green and long walks with the dog.

And for a European break?
I really want to go to Croatia. I hear it is very beautiful, natural and unspoilt.

Kinky Boots is our Show of the Month for June, with ticket plus hotel packages from £99.
