We have stayed at The Rendezvous @ Skipton Hotel a couple of times over the last two years. Each time it has been a very enjoyable experience and one to be recommended. Both times we have stayed as part of a group of eight which can sometimes be a little inconvenient when trying to get a large enough table to accommodate everyone at mealtimes, but not at The Rendezvous.
The first time we were on a two night stay with dinner on the first night, however, after we decided to hire a longboat on the canal for the day, we asked if we could have dinner on the second night as we’d already got our picnics packed; ‘No problem’ was the answer.
The canal runs along the back of the hotel and if you are lucky you can get a table in the conservatory and watch the swans glide by. So after a day on the canal, on our first night we went down the road to the pub to eat and what a mistake that was, the meal was very disappointing.
The next day was wet to say the least. After a self service breakfast we walked into Skipton town which is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the hotel (the bus stop is just over the road for anyone unable to walk that far). The town boasts a market on a Saturday with stalls up the main street, lots of very nice independent shops and one or two high street names, together with a few pubs and coffee shops – what more could you ask for? We spent the wet afternoon of our stay at Skipton Castle, which turned out to be really interesting.
We later returned to the hotel for our inclusive meal; well what a difference from the previous night! The meal was superb with one couple choosing a flambé dish which was cooked at the side of the table, very impressive. The next day we went for a lovely walk in the nearby Dales before returning home.
Our second stay as a group at this hotel was to celebrate a ‘big’ birthday for one of our party. This time we went half board and I now think that that would be my recommendation when staying here. The staff were happy to help in the celebrations, looked after and presented the cake we had taken, joining in the banter to make it a stay to remember.
This is a family run hotel with the owner actually living within the hotel and taking meals in the restaurant with the guests. He takes an active interest in the guests and their welfare and keeps the staff on their toes! All the staff are friendly and helpful which all adds to the experience. It’s a great place to stay!
