With the chillier temperatures and the earlier, darker nights in autumnal October, it can sometimes be difficult to decide where to go and what activities to do in the October Half Term holidays.

If it’s a bit dark and drab outside, why not jet off with the family to sunnier skies on an October Half Term European getaway? Europe is home to many beautiful destinations which offer sun, sea, sand and an escape from the seasonal chills.

1) Canary Islands, Spain

The perfect choice for a balmy break in October, the Canary Islands are a popular choice for those seeking those precious last rays of sunshine before returning to the UK for the Christmas countdown.

Our favourites of the seven islands are Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and there’s plenty to see and do on each of the islands. With sea lion shows, safaris and lemur feeding experiences, Fuerteventura’s La Lajita Oasis Park is a fun family attraction which will have the kids entertained for hours. If you’re after more of an adventurous adrenaline rush over the October break, however, there are camel safaris in Lanzarote and there’s also an exciting, Thai-themed Siam aqua Park in Tenerife, with slides, rapids and a sandy beach all inside the complex.

2) Disneyland Paris, France

If quality family time is on the agenda for the October holidays, France is home to the world-famous Disneyland Paris – which is the epitome of family fun!

A magical world where the kids’ (and big kids’) favourite Disney characters come to life, Disneyland Paris is home to many jaw-dropping rides, exciting attractions, colourful parades, enchanting shows and more, making it a great place to entertain the family during the October break.

3) The Algarve, Portugal

Well known as a great family destination, the Algarve is a top choice for family fun and also for getting that all-important sunshine fix.

With plenty of opportunity to while away the afternoons splashing in the surf and soaking up the sun, the Algarve promises a complete recharge of those sleepy batteries. Once feeling relaxed and refreshed, there’s plenty to discover and explore in and around this gem in southern Portugal. The Zoomarine Park is home to whales, dolphins, tropical birds, but as well as being a wildlife park, it also boasts the exhilarating Zoomarine Beach water park, with slides, pools and aquatic playground. There are also many other attractions to enjoy in the Algarve, such as karting at the Hot Wheels Raceway, exploring the world of science at the Children’s Life Sciences Centre and ancient-Rome-themed mini golf at the Family Golf Park – all great for autumn sun and family fun!

4) Benidorm, Spain

A great destination which promises a sunnier climate, Benidorm is a Spanish spot on the Costa Blanca which is jam-packed with fun activities for families.

As well as its miles and miles of golden sandy beaches, Benidorm is a great place to head to a theme park, sail the sea on a boat trip or explore the culture and Spanish cuisine in the traditional Old Town. Terra Mitica theme park houses some of the best white-knuckle rides in Europe and is open at the weekend throughout October, it even has special Halloween decor and spooky events going on from 8th October 2016 which the kids will love! The Terra Nature Wildlife Park, Aqua Natura water park and the mesmerising Blue-Flag Levante Beach are just a few of the other sights and attractions which will make your October Half Term in Benidorm one to remember.

5) Rome, Italy

With peak temperatures averaging out at almost 25°C, Rome is a wonderful October holiday destination for those looking for a half-term short break filled with sunshine and culture.

As Italy’s capital city, it’s no surprise that there’s plenty to see and explore in Rome, and it’s a destination which is brimming with sights to see and fun activities to do with the kids. Of course the Colosseum is an absolute must when visiting Rome, but there is also the picturesque Villa Borghese which is a wonderful spot for a picnic or a bike ride, not to mention its spectacular zoo where kids can bike, go-kart or ride the Bioparco Express train around the park. Rome is even home to a Roman Gladiator School where kids and adults alike can dress up and learn how to be a legendary gladiator – now that’s how you do an October Half Term!
