This year, my favourite film ever is celebrating its 75th anniversary – The Wizard of Oz! To pay homage to this glorious fact, I have devised a handy list of short break ideas suited to all of the (spoiler alert) prizes at the end of the film. So whether you’re brainy, lovable, courageous or appreciative of your home comforts, you can find a break that’s as perfect as the wonderful world of Oz.

For the Brainy

Theatre – An instant hit when it appeared in the West End, The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night Time is the sure-fire hit theatre show for the clever clogs amongst us. Based on the award-winning best-seller by Mark Haddon, the story follows the 15-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone as he attempts to figure out the mysterious death of his neighbour’s dog. Enjoy this visually-outstanding piece of theatre as you try and solve the clues, too.

Attraction – Impress your friends with a trip to Warwick Castle as you show off your clear historical prowess. With a fireball trebuchet, falconry and the castle grounds to explore, Warwick Castle is definitely the place to be for expanding your knowledge.

Hotel – It has to be The Library Hotel in New York! Each of the 10 floors is assigned a unique category of the Dewey Decimal System, and rooms are decorated accordingly, for example The Love Room contains books about love, and The Fairy Tale Room has a collection of fantastical favourites.

Location – From its prestigious university to its medieval city centre, the city of Oxford is the place to be to get those creative juices flowing. Browse the Covered Market or explore the riverside Botanic Garden and feel truly at ease in the land of the knowledgeable.

For the Love Hearts –

Theatre – For an unforgettable theatre experience, ‘Chicago’ on Broadway is definitely a top choice. Enjoy the sizzle and sex appeal of the show with your other half and watch the sparks fly as the drama unfolds.

Attraction – Indulge in a spot of flirty fun at the Paradis Latin show in Paris. With astounding musical comedy, fanfare and dancing, it’s a sure-fire way to impress a beau on a romantic trip.

Hotel – Stay in the lap of luxury at the 5* Grand Hotel & Spa, York. Pop open the champagne, tuck into a sumptuous afternoon tea and look forward to a revitalising massage in the hotel’s spa facilities. It’ll be just like a honeymoon!

Location – Although Paris is a notoriously passionate location, Venice is ideal for spending precious time with a loved one on a short break. Sit back on a gondola in the sunshine as you take in the gorgeous scenery of the local area. What’s more, you can share a gelato (or two) with your other half – what could be nicer than that?

Attraction – Before you try out outdoor (scary) skydiving, head to Manchester’s indoor skydiving centre for the experience of a lifetime! The cylindrical tube will whizz you off into mind-blowing heights as you feel what it’s like to free-fall.

Hotel – Although the sleepy surroundings of Clitheroe may seem quiet, adrenaline junkies staying in the area can look forward to a range of fun and exciting activities right on their doorstep. Stay at the Stirk House Hotel and look forward to trying out clay pigeon shooting, horse riding and even a spot of hot air ballooning.

Location – Reykjavik is the place to be for those who like a bit of adventure. Wander off the beaten track and experience once-in-a-lifetime activities such as whale watching, snowmobiling, or horse-trekking.

For those who like a home from home! –

Theatre – Enjoy a much-loved family favourite or a famous Shakespearian play at Stratford-upon-Avon’s famed RSC theatre. Fly high with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys as they experience timeless adventures in Neverland in ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’ or experience a true tragedy or comedy from the iconic Bard of Avon.

Attraction - Chester Zoo is the place for you! With amazing animals, fascinating displays and plenty to see and do throughout the day, this fun environment is perfect for those who want a short break not too far away from home.

Hotel – The warm and inviting Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa makes for a perfect choice of accommodation for a home away from home break. With a large swimming pool, a relaxing bar area, a tempting restaurant menu and spacious guest rooms, you’ll never want to leave!

Location – For a peaceful and homely break, The Lake District is the ideal destination. Enjoy a scenic walk or bike ride in the day before cosying up in a local pub with a hearty meal and drink. Who needs to go abroad?!
