I was lucky enough to get the chance to go down to London and see ‘The Jersey Boys’ for the first time. As I’m not a huge Four Seasons fan, and wasn’t sure that I would know that many of the songs I didn’t think I would enjoy the show as much as others that I’ve seen. However from start to finish the show had me gripped, telling a fantastic story with sing-a-long tunes throughout, and I also surprised myself that I knew pretty much all of the songs! But while the music is a key part of the production, the show is much more than a sing-a-long musical, with a true story running at the core.
The show tells the story of Frankie Valli and the four seasons, from the forming the band to their reunion. Since I didn’t fully know the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, just a few of their big hits, it was very exciting to watch and find out about the rise to fame of the band and the background story behind each character.
The style of the show was also really interesting – the narration format used was really engaging. Each singer actually talked to the audience and that helped give a further understanding to the story that would have previously been lost.
The actors who played the four members of the four seasons were all fantastic actors, with incredible accents and singing voices, and they all played a key role in keeping the audience engaged for the entirety of the show.
The singing was incredible – pitch perfect from start to finish, with hits such as Sherry, Walk Like a Man and Big Girls Don’t Cry being performed flawlessly. Every member of the audience was singing along and engaged, especially when Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You was played – a song that everyone knows, whether the original Four Seasons version or one of the many covers that have been made over the years.
I found myself just wanting to find out what happens to the band at the end of all their trials and tribulations as the story behind their success really carried emotional impact.
So whether you are a Frankie Valli fan, a Four Seasons fan, or if you haven’t really heard of who they are, this show is definitely worth a watch – a true rags to riches story.
