With the arrival of two Giant Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo in December last year, now is a great time to plan your Edinburgh break. Since the two pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, journeyed from China to their new home in the Scottish Capital Edinburgh Zoo has seen an increase in its number of visitors with people hoping to catch a glimpse of the pandas.

Edinburgh Zoo is only the 8th zoo in the Western hemisphere to have Giant Pandas and the first zoo to have Giant Pandas in the UK for 17 years. It’s hoped that with time the two Pandas will mate and produce Panda Cubs but for now they are getting settled into their new home. With plenty of hotels in Edinburgh to choose from a visit to Edinburgh Zoo offers a great escape for the whole family.

With the popularity of the Giant Pandas viewing has been limited to timed allocations, which can be booked at the same time as your Edinburgh Zoo tickets. Currently the timed viewing tickets are available until the 30th June, though it is expected that the Pandas will stay at Edinburgh Zoo for at least ten years.

As well as being home to the young Pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang Edinburgh Zoo has over 1,000 animals, from Lions and Rhinoceros to an array of Monkeys and the iconic Penguin Parade there is plenty to discover at this fabulous attraction. Plus with an overnight stay there is time to see some of the city’s other top attractions including Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyrood House or the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Will you be heading to Edinburgh to see the Giant Pandas? What is your favourite UK Zoo?

  1. They are related to bears and to rconocas. They are related to all mammals, and all animals. The real question is which other animals are pandas most closely related to.Common names aren’t always a true reflection of what the animal truly is there is the dolphin mammal and the dolphin fish. Killer whales are actually in the dolphin family, not the whale family. Sea horses and the common land mammal. Pandas resemble bears physically, so people just call them panda bears.
