It’s a familiar story: the little darlings break up from school in the early summer and there’s only one place for them to go – Grandma’s house. While they enjoy their summer holidays, it’s easy to feel like you’ve missed out on yours!

Whether you love it or just pretend to, 6 weeks in the company of school-age kids means that you deserve a holiday too. Depending on how stressful the experience has been, the recovery period could mean anything from a couple of nights in the country to a week-long getaway in the sun. We like to think we have a break for every kind of grandparent this year…

Lake-District-Breaks

Embracing the Quiet (for Grandparents with Noisy Grandkids)

To our mind, there’s no better place than The Lake District to rediscover peace and quiet after a busy few weeks. Whether you want to blow off some steam hiking over Lakeland fells, enjoy a relaxing boat trip and take it all in from the water, or simply indulge at one of our fabulous spa hotels, there’s much to enjoy in The Lakes. Our favourite hotel this year is the sublime 4* Daffodil Hotel & Spa, which has had rave reviews all summer, but this is just one of many fine retreats in The Lake District to get away to this autumn.

If you’re Grandparents with Noisy Grandkids, the shock of total peace and quiet might be a tough transition to make. Enjoy the best of both worlds with a break in Stratford-upon-Avon; vibrant and historic, there’s plenty to do here including watching the fabulous Royal Shakespeare Company do their thing, but the pace of life is just quiet enough to feel relaxed. Our most popular package here – a two night stay, with a scrumptious dinner included on the first night, at the 4* Ettington Chase – offers a great value short break away from it all.

The-Algrave-Beach-Break

Late Summer Sun (for Grandparents Who Think They’ve Missed the Boat)

If you’re the Grandparents Who Think They’ve Missed the Boat when it comes to enjoying a proper summer holiday, don’t worry – we promise you haven’t! There are lots of great beach breaks that enjoy warm, sunny days until October and, remember, it gets an awful lot cheaper as soon as the kids go back to school. One of our favourite spots in late summer is sunny Sorrento. With some lovely hotels to choose from here, you could be enjoying a glass of Limoncello on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in no time at all!

If we have one top tip for late summer sun however, The Algarve takes it; cheap, just two hours’ flight from most UK airports, and near-guaranteed sunshine, it’s perfect for anything between a long weekend and a full fortnight away. Of all the great locations on The Algarve, Albufeira is perhaps the most popular – between the historic old town and the vibrant bars, there’s much besides the gorgeous beaches to explore here. Our Algarve flights & hotels packages are the ideal choice for squeezing in a summer break even after the summer holidays are over.

Turkey-Tinsel-Packages

Turkey & Tinsel (for Super-Organised Grandparents)

If you’re the kind of Super-Organised Grandparent that has activity planners and tonnes of activities for your grandkids all summer long, it’s not likely you’re after a last-minute break. But that’s no reason not to treat yourself! Before the family take over the house again at Christmas, why not book to get away on of our ever-popular Turkey & Tinsel breaks?

Whilst some may balk at the idea of even thinking about Christmas so early, we know that as the Super-Organised Grandparent you’ll already have several wrapped presents in the back of the shoe cupboard and a turkey in the deep-freeze. And we’re ok with that. Offering a welcome, festive-themed break away from it all on dates throughout November and December, these packages are the perfect gift to give yourselves this Christmas.
