Alton Towers have recently unveiled their brand new ride for 2018: The Wicker Man. We were lucky enough to visit the park and be among the first people to try it out. This revolutionary, globally unique ride which combines the classic wooden rollercoaster with cutting edge technology and is the first in the world to fuse wood and fire!

Easily the biggest news in the industry in 2018, Wicker Man is the first wooden rollercoaster to be built in the UK for over twenty years. There has been huge demand for a wooden rollercoaster at Alton Towers for several years and Wicker Man has taken four years of planning and development under the disguise of SW8. It has been common knowledge for around a year that Alton Towers were building a new wooden rollercoaster but the theme was only teased in ‘The Welcoming’ scare maze at Scarefest 2017.

The experience begins before you get onto the ride with an immersive show telling the story of “The Beornen” – the beings that inhabit the woods surrounding Alton Towers and their worship of a pagan deity called “The Wicker Man”.

The ride is visually stunning with the six storey high, part-ram-part-human centrepiece looming large over the plaza outside the ride; smoke billowing from deep within the structure and flames shooting up each time the ride cars pass through.

The ride is very fast with several sharp turns and three passes through the “Wicker Man” structure where you’re blinded by smoke and feel water drip on you from above. The height restriction for Wicker Man is 1.2m meaning it is more accessible than the other big rollercoasters at Alton Towers such as Rita, Galactica, Nemesis and Oblivion. However younger riders may find the visuals and dark areas leading to the ride a bit scary.

The story and the visuals are what set this ride apart from other recent additions to the park, making it an immersive experience from start to finish and something very different to compliment the other thrill rides at Alton Towers.

Don’t just take our word for it, visit Alton Towers and experience Wicker Man for yourself – you won’t be disappointed.
