SuperBreak’s Sarah was lucky enough to join the cast of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical recently to do some vocal exercises and learn part of a dance from the show. Along with a group of journalists, she watched the show after enjoying a backstage tour.
With the stage lights beating down on us, we gathered around the orchestra pit to warm up our vocals for a rendition of The Loco-Motion. Joined by three of the cast, Hannah Jay-Allan, Jammy Kasongo and Rosie Heath, the group were challenged to sing and dance to a section of the famous song.
The energetic resident choreographer Suzanne Thomas put us through our paces, giving us a taste of what it’s like to be on stage, just without the huge audience staring back at you! Everyone picked up the steps within an hour and this made us eager to watch the real thing.
Later on that evening we went to see the show at the Aldwych Theatre in London. It is a story of the rise to fame of one of the most popular and successful singer-songwriters of all time. With great music, I found myself singing along to song after song, not realising previously they had all been written by Carole King. With songs such as Take Good Care of my Baby, One Fine Day and You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman, it’s well-loved by a wide range of ages.
After a fun-filled day we headed back to the lovely 4* Cavendish Hotel, near the West End, to recover from all our dancing with a good night’s sleep.
