Oscar Winners 2012

This weekend saw celebrities from around the globe gather on the red carpet for the biggest night of the year in Hollywood. Yes, it was the night of the Oscars, the 84th Academy Awards, which celebrate the cinematic achievements of the last year. After much speculation and excitement, the winners were announced. Among the most successful productions were The Artist and Hugo, with actress Meryl Streep picking up her third Oscar. A full list of winners can be found here.

The Artist won awards for Best Picture, Costume Design and Directing, with leading actor French dreamboat Jean Dujardin picking up Best Actor in a Leading Role. Set in Hollywood in the 1920s, this black and white movie follows the career of silent movie star George Valentin as he makes the transition into “the talkies” and has his world turned upside-down by the aspiring dancer Peppy Miller.

If you’ve seen The Artist and have been inspired by the nostalgia of a by-gone era then we’re sure you’ll love the Singin’ in the Rain musical. Now open at the Palace Theatre in London’s West End, this new production based on the classic movie is also set in 1920s Hollywood when the silver screen found its voice and never looked back. Hotel and ticket packages for this amazing show are now on sale, which is a must-see for The Artist fans.

Another Oscar success was Meryl Streep who won an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her part in The Iron Lady, which also won the Best Makeup award for the stunning transformation from Streep into the iron lady herself, Margaret Thatcher. This incredible film documents Thatcher’s rise through the Conservative Party, her relationship with her loyal husband Denis and her role as prime minister.
