Superbreak’s Online Marketing Manager, Khalid Amin took a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park earlier this month. Here’s what he thought of its latest exhibition…

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is pretty much one of my favourite day trips in the Yorkshire area. It’s a gently rolling landscape of 500 acres of parkland dotted with huge sculptures by world famous artists such as Henry Moore. Whether you live in the region or are heading to Yorkshire or the North East, it’s a great stop-over, easily worth a few hours on your way home. Located just 5 minutes off the M1 at junction 38 it’s really accessible without making a huge detour from your journey and serves way better coffee than the service station just up the M1.

It’s effectively a huge, open gallery of world famous artists including Barbara Hepworth and Andy Goldsworthy. They also have a really impressive array of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, the one currently showing is by Yinka Shinabare showing in the Underground Gallery. He works with textiles and fabrics which if I’m perfectly honest didn’t really sound my cup of tea but was actually really fun and visually looked stunning. Who wouldn’t like a statue of a fox carrying a revolver and a Blackberry in a flowery jacket? Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera but you can take a look at the slide show of images here.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

It’s not just the art and rolling countryside that make Yorkshire Sculpture Park a great day out, the restaurant is really good value and serves excellent quality food. My wife had barbecued pulled pork served with flat bread whilst I opted for salmon fishcakes. Both dishes were served with a bucket of chips and salad and came in at less than a tenner each. Fussy kids are also well catered for with a decent kids menu. The YSP is worth recommending alone just on their restaurant.

Even if you think sculpture isn’t your thing I think you’d be surprised how much you enjoy your visit. Every time we go to the sculpture park we see a superb exhibition by an artist I’ve never heard of but nearly always enjoy. It’s a place you can visit any season of year and looks equally stunning in bright sunshine or on a crisp winter’s day. If you are heading on a weekend break to Yorkshire we have a great selection of hotels in Leeds or Wakefield to choose from, the YSP is a short trip down the M1.
