Roses, heart-shaped chocolates, champagne, candles, dinner for two…remind you of anything? Yep, it’s that time of year again. Valentine’s Day comes with a never-ending list of die-hard clichés and whether you’re an old romantic or cheese-aphobic, they’re here to stay.  Being internationally known as ‘the most romantic city in the world’, nothing screams Valentine’s Day like a mini-break to Paris, but why exactly does the French capital have this famous tag line? Here is our definitive 7 reasons of why Paris is the most romantic city in the world…

Reason 1 – It Has a Wishing Bridge

What is it about bridges? There’s something terribly romantic and dramatic about them wherever you are in the world. But Paris has gone one step further in the romance-stakes and produced a magical wish-granting bridge. Pont Marie is the second oldest bridge in Paris and dates back to 1614. Legend has it that if you make a wish and seal it with a kiss as you pass underneath, your wish will be granted!

Reason 2 – You Can Have a Candlelit Dinner up the Eiffel Tower

For the ultimate French dining experience, you can indulge in one of the two fine dining restaurants in Paris’ most iconic landmark. Just imagine, amazing French food, stunning views of the Paris skyline and a good bottle of vin rouge. Choose between the (pricey) 58 Tour Eiffel or the (even pricier) Le Jules Verne Restaurant. 58’s Valentine’s menu is a 5-course meal including champagne and wine, but starting at 120 Euros a pop, the experience doesn’t come cheap!

Reason 3 – It is Home to Some of History’s Greatest Love Stories

No trip to Paris is complete without a saunter through one of the many Jardins around the city. The Jardin du Luxembourg has been a romance hotspot for centuries, with famous couples from Napoleon and Josephine to Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir being known to frequently meander through the grounds. It’s still a love hub today, with beautiful statues, fountains and flowerbeds providing the perfect backdrop for a romantic stroll.

Reason 4 – The City is Full of Romantic French Boudoirs

From shabby chic to lavish luxury, Paris is home to every type of accommodation under the sun. Regardless of the star rating, the hotels in Paris all come with French charm and that little bit of je ne sais quoi. For the ultimate romantic accommodation, The Westin Paris Hotel offers 5* luxury and elegant traditional French décor right in the heart of the first Arrondissement. All guestrooms feature plush carpets, sumptuous fabrics and breathtaking views of the City of Lights.

Reason 5 – A Padlock in Paris Can Bring You Eternal Love

Probably the most poetic (and slightly ridiculous) gesture of romance in Paris is the growing trend that has invaded the Pont des Arts bridge. Couples engrave their initials into a padlock, lock it to the railings of the bridge and throw the key into the River Seine below. This amorous ritual is believed to bring the couples eternal love and since the recent trend took off about two years ago, a staggering 2000 padlocks of all colours, shapes and sizes have been locked to the bridge.

Reason 6 – ‘The Most Beautiful Avenue in The World’

For those of you hoping for a slightly more materialistic declaration of love, head to the Champs-Elysees. Stretching from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde, the most famous street in Paris is the epitome of French chic. Adorned with elegant Parisian restaurants and exclusive designer boutiques, the Champs-Elysees is the ultimate place to see and be seen. Besides, what says ‘I love you’ more than a new Chanel bag, dahling?

Reason 7 – The Ultimate Romantic Graffiti

Tucked away in the artisans hub of Montmartre lies the famous wall which has ‘I love You’ handwritten 311 times in 250 different languages. The ‘I Love You’ wall is hidden away on the quaint Jehan Rictus Square and consists of 612 midnight blue tiles adorned in a stunning collection of handwritten notes.
