You might have already heard the exciting news that’s rocking the West End this week – that the role of Mother Superior in the sensational musical Sister Act will be played by none other than Whoopi Goldberg herself!
Whoopi played Deloris Van Cartier in the original films, the lounge singer-turned-nun forced to hide out in a convent to avoid the mob, but for this production, she’s taking on the more authoritative role of Mother Superior at the London Palladium, standing in for Sheila Hancock next month.
Whether you’re already a fan of the films or not, I can tell you that Sister Act is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable screen-to-stage adaptations I’ve ever seen – so good, in fact, that we included it in our elite list of World Class Musicals this month, along with Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot and Dirty Dancing. And with Whoopi Goldberg in the mix, it’s now more of a treat than ever!
If you’re looking for a reason to visit London in August – and the gorgeous summer weather still isn’t enough – then what could be better than a night of revelry with a superfluity (that’s what a group of nuns is called!) of all-singing, all-dancing nuns?
A word of caution though – if you are thinking of taking a theatre break next month to see Whoopi Goldberg in the show, please make sure you check the date carefully, as she won’t be appearing on 16th or 23rd August. Not that the other performers aren’t fantastic too, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that musical fans won’t want to miss!
