As the interval approached during Beautiful The Carole King Story, my guest turned to me and said, “I don’t want this to end”, which says so much about this fabulous musical. The song list reads like a Grammy Award winning portfolio – Will You still Love me Tomorrow, You Got a Friend, I Feel the Earth Move under my Feet…….but you don’t need to know the songs (although I guarantee you will) as the whole package moves you along in an emotional roller coaster.
The story line is, in its heart, a love story yet so much more. Dealing with competition, love gained and lost, gaining self-belief, nurturing raw talent and performance….and boy does this show perform. You will laugh at its great one liners, reach for the tissues in the heart breaking moments, and stare in wonder at the work rate of this great cast, including the amazing Katie Brayben as Carole King. Her mannerisms, styling and of course singing voice are all captured in this special performance.
Not since I first saw the Jersey Boys 8 years ago have I seen a more upbeat, feel good musical as this…..and there’s a hint in the title, this is a real beauty! If you only see one West End show this year, you know what to do.
