Growing up, my older sister was a massive Carole King fan and even though it wasn’t my era you can’t help but love her album, Tapestry. But I’d never really thought of the story behind the songs or what else Carole King had done, so Beautiful was a revelation.
Carole had written hit songs from the age of 16, classic hits such as Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, through to The Locomotion. Not only is the music of the show amazing (it will have you tapping your feet all the way through), but the story of Carole’s relationship with her husband and writing partner Gerry Goffin is both fascinating and heart wrenching. This musical has everything – a great story, brilliant music, a talented cast led by Katie Brayben as Carole and Alan Morrissey as her husband, lots of laughs and even a bit of dancing courtesy of The Drifters.
Staying at the Imperial Hotel with its central location in Russell Square packaged by SuperBreak with the theatre ticket made it an affordable break – and I might even go again to treat my sister because if I enjoyed it then I know as a fan she will love it!
