Mary Poppins

From January | Various, UK Tour

Practically perfect in every way, the Mary Poppins musical first appeared on the stage 11 years ago. Success has taken the show around the world, and now this much-loved production tours the UK in 2016. In Manchester from January, Birmingham from March and Edinburgh from April, there are plenty of chances to catch this magical show before the wind changes!

The War of the Worlds

From February | Dominion Theatre, London

Something of a spectacle, Jeff Wayne’s incredibly successful musical adaptation of the H G Wells story makes its way to the stage in 2016. With stunning visual effects, the huge stage at the Dominion Theatre will be swarmed by other-worldy creatures, and the production is set to feature the story’s iconic Martian Fighting Machine too. The show even has Liam Neeson (in holograph form, at least) appearing as The Journalist.

Motown The Musical

From February | Shaftesbury Theatre, London

The true story of founder Berry Gordy’s world-conquering record label, set across a number of decades, Motown The Musical is the West End’s most soulful new show. Transferring to London after a much-loved run in New York, the production is full of hits. How could you not enjoy a show that features an 18-piece orchestra playing classic songs like ‘Dancing In The Street’ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’? Certain to have audiences dancing out of the theatre in 2016, Motown The Musical is one of the year’s hottest new musicals!

Mrs Henderson Presents

From February | Noel Coward Theatre, London

Following a successful run at the Theatre Royal in Bath, the stage adaptation of the popular British film of 2005 makes its way to London in 2016. Hailed by critics as ‘unashamedly entertaining’ (Daily Mail) and a ‘defiantly patriotic piece with a delightful score’ (The Guardian), there’s a sense that this could be the finest home-grown show in the West End for years. Cheeky, fun, poignant and uplifting in turn, Mrs Henderson Presents is British Musical Theatre at its best.

Funny Girl

From April | Savoy Theatre, London

Who doesn’t love Sheridan Smith? The BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning actress is a firm favourite both on stage and on the small screen, and has edged ever-closer to ‘National Treasure’ status in the past couple of years. Starring as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, Smith’s performance has garnered acclaim already, and the show transfers to the Savoy Theatre from April. The role that made Barbra Streisand famous (for which she won an Oscar, and enjoyed huge success on Broadway and in the West End), listen out for iconic songs like ‘People’ and ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’.

Aladdin

From May | Prince Edward Theatre, London

The other big Broadway transfer coming to the West End this year, Disney’s Aladdin has impressed New York audiences since February 2014, having been nominated for five Tony Awards. Making its much-anticipated London début in May, the show follows in the footsteps of Disney’s other huge hit The Lion King – fans of that show are certain to love discovering a ‘Whole New World’ with Aladdin. Funny, sweet and featuring great new songs, the West End production of Aladdin is not to be missed.

Billy Elliot

From June | Various, UK Tour

One of the most successful British Musicals of all time, Billy Elliot has spent over 10 years in the West End, winning 5 Olivier Awards. The Broadway production won an incredible 10 Tony Awards. Loved the world over, Billy Elliot The Musical has firmly established itself as essential viewing for all theatre fans. If you haven’t seen it, 2016’s UK tour is the ideal opportunity. In Cardiff from June, Edinburgh from September and Manchester from November, Billy Elliot is a must-see show in 2016!
