Superbreak’s Customer Engagement Executive, Kirstie Jones hit the O2 Arena for the biggest, baddest performance of the year…Jay Z

Last weekend as part of a birthday treat I headed off to London’s O2 Arena for Jay-Z’s Saturday night performance of his four night residency. After devouring a hefty burger and glass of vino at the handily located Chiquitos outside of the arena, I headed inside and settled in ready to get my swag on.

Three hours later I was still waiting for the gig to get started after support act Timbaland failed to perform his warm up act (he did appear later on for a freestyle mixing session part-way through Jay-Z’s set). After a lengthy build up I was giddy with excitement when Sean finally appeared on stage, draped with the fattest chains I’ve ever seen and with a cheeky half smile on his face.

From the first syllable to the last his performance was unfathomably faultless. I’d go as far as to say that his hit songs that I know and love sounded even better live. Showing off his incredible skill with bags of style he made belting out his tongue twisting rap verses seem effortless.

He kept the crowd pleased throughout the whole of his set, covering off tracks from throughout his epic career and even performed my new favourite song from the Magna Carter Holy Grail album, Picasso Baby. My personal highlight was Encore; the reaction from the crowd was insane.

Ever the charmer, Jay-Z made sure to pause proceedings towards the end of his set to turn up the lights, point the camera into the crowd and give shout outs to his fans, picking out the pretty girls along the way. When he spotted a girl with a birthday banner, he got us all to sing Happy Birthday to her (I think he’d missed the memo that my birthday was the day after).

The evening reached its climax when we were transported from London to New York with an amazing performance of Empire State of Mind set against a glittering arena lit up with mobile phones.  It was a hugely enjoyable evening and I really recommend seeing Jay-Z live if you get the chance!
