I recently visited The O2 for ‘A Night of Championship Boxing’ with my son who enjoys a good fight! It was certainly excellent value for money as the programme started at 17.30 and finished at approximately 23.20. As the last three bouts were televised there was a short break until the start time of the first of these, but that was only twenty minutes or so, we certainly did not seem to be sat about waiting for the next fight to start.
There were four Championship bouts on the cards for the evening culminating with the WBC Super Lightweight Championship bout between Kevin Mitchell and the Mexican Daniel Estrada. John Wayne Hibbert defeated Tyler Goodjohn for the WBC Intercontinental Light Welterweight Championship. Tommy Martin defeated Ricky Boylan for the English Light Welterweight Championship and John Ryder knocked out Argentinian Billi Godoy for the WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Champsionship.
Charlie Edwards had his debut fight as a professional since representing his Country as part of Team GB at the Olympics.
I have to say I was not particularly enthusiastic about the night, but was prepared to accompany my son for the evening as it was something he wanted to see. It was actually a very pleasant evening, the atmosphere was very friendly and I’m sure there were a few ‘bets’ going on – one of the comments I heard was ‘this one’s for the washing up’! And, just like me the men were choosing on the colour of the contestants shorts!
A good night was had by all – I would thoroughly recommend it!
